The final act goes haywire, but that’s not Hall’s fault. The last hour or so brings the story back into the time of the first film, resolving the story. Part of it is set in the year of the title, when the curse that haunts the town of Shadyside begins. That this one is the least of the three doesn’t mean it’s bad. Sink and Rudd are particularly good as they navigate a rocky relationship between sisters, each with a vastly different view on the world. Things go wrong during the annual camp battle between the kids from the wealthy Sunnyvale and those from the more working-class Shadyside. Sadie Sink as the tough Ziggy Berman and Emily Rudd as her older, perfect sister Cindy really shine. This one is a take on the summer-camp slasher genre, complete with a copious amount of ax murders. Deena’s relationship with Samantha (Olivia Scott Welch) figures into each installment and drives her motivation throughout. She gets help from her nerdy brother Josh (Benjamin Flores Jr.), and other friends. Kiana Madeira is top notch as Deena, a Final Girl type who figures out something is amiss and has to try to stop it.

Those monsters can hear, but they can’t see, so everyone has to be quiet all of the time. Emily Blunt leads her family as the world tries to survive the alien monsters that have invaded Earth. No, it’s not as good as John Krasinski’s original.
